Halifax, an Atlantic Ocean port in eastern Canada, is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia. A major business centre, it’s also known for its maritime history. The city’s dominated by the hilltop Citadel, a star-shaped fort completed in the 1850s. Waterfront warehouses known as the Historic Properties recall Halifax’s days as a trading hub for privateers, notably during the War of 1812.
Visitors can explore the stories of immigrants who entered Canada through Pier 21 during the 1900s at the Canadian Museum of Immigration. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has collections related to naval, shipping and passenger ship history, including a number of small boats. The Victorian-era Halifax Public Gardens is bordered by Spring Garden Road, lined with restaurants, bars and boutique shops. Home to abandoned military fortifications, the 400-hectare McNabs Island in the Halifax Harbour is reached by ferry. The provincial park has kilometres of roads and trails passing cobblestone beaches, salt marshes and forests.
